Here’s another of our projects which hasn’t yet made it to the thumbprints.
Finished earlier this year, this was a project that involved removing a wall between the kitchen and family room.
The before – cramped, dark, and not very useful for a family of 5
This is the wall that separated the kitchen from the family room – refrigerator and ovens are behind this wall
The clients have an active family of 5. One of the concerns was the challenge of keeping an eye on the children who played in the family room which was so blocked off from the parents in the kitchen. The client hated the kitchen – the dark cabinets and dropped ceiling added to the feeling of being cut off. We noticed some poor installation choices by the previous owners -- moldings not properly joined, rough edges on the counters, uneven tile flooring -- that indicated this kitchen wasn't up to professional standards.
Our first design involved closing off the kitchen door to the dining room and widening the door into the family room. The dividing wall with the bar went next, so the natural light from both rooms would highlight the entire great room. We also removed the drop ceiling in the kitchen, and replaced the fireplace. These are the drawings we did for the client prior to selecting the materials:
The raised section on the island holds the second micro/oven combination with a half pantry facing the family room, and enough seats for the 3 children. A few material choices designed for easy cleaning (our designers help you with this process)…
And here’s the final:
We promise not to make any remarks about the family that plays together…
